6/30/2023 0 Comments Avatar the rise of kyoshi seriesI did, of course, hand over her birthday present in October, as that was when I saw her (her birthday is in May…) but that meant I had plenty of time to read it before I presented it to her, and I had already ordered the sequel, so I would have it finished before I left Ireland a few days later. That is, until Sinéad, my sister, asked for the Rise of Kyoshi for her birthday. That, plus lockdown, plus various other nonsense meant that although I always intended to get them, I never really got around to it. That question was complicated by the fact that the Kyoshi novels haven’t actually been picked up by a British publisher, so they’re not available in British bookstores. So I was always going to read the novelisation of the avatar two before Aang – Avatar Kyoshi, an earthbender who lived for 230 years, created the Dai Li, ended the reign of terror of Chin the Conqueror, and nearly ended up getting Aang boiled in oil. I also thoroughly enjoyed the followup animated series The Legend of Korra, about the next incarnation of the avatar spirit, and have read the graphic novel additions to the canon of the avatarverse multiple times. I think the entire universe is a deeply inspired piece of worldbuilding, the animated series is beautifully rendered and the plots are compellingly built. I have mentioned before on this blog – although it was a few years ago – that I love the tv series Avatar The Last Airbender.

6/30/2023 0 Comments Slay Belles by Anton PalmerIgnoring this forewarning, the ladies continue on their way to the abandoned Santa Land and, after several photo-ops and some candy cane-humping, they realize that they are being watched. Ranger Sean (Stephen Lunsford: Teen Wolf series, SIXERS series) arrives on the scene shortly after the ladies, delivering the news that there is a murderer stalking young children in town. Before they can even make it to Santa Land, however, the ladies stop off at a local watering hole where they tango with owner Cherry (Diane Salinger: Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure 1985, Batman Returns 1992), an avowed Christmas hater, along with a drunken sex offender (Matt Eskew: Alleluia! The Devil’s Carnival 2016) dressed as Santa, and the fun drunk who never tips (that’d be director Blake Reigle, who has brought us 2007’s Beneath the Surface and 2017’s One of Us). 6/30/2023 0 Comments Life in a medieval city giesOverall, though, the narration focuses on Troyes in the mid-thirteenth century. The book is not without some wider, it ventures out to neighbouring territories at times and mentions events that happened a generation or two before and a generation after 1250. The book centers on the city of Troyes in northern France in the year 1250 and describes the state of that city at that moment in time. Rather than trying to somehow cram an entire millennium and continent’s worth of urban history into one short book the authors decided to take a more focused approach. I’m glad I did because this is a great introductory history and I’d definitely recommend it.įrom the outset Life in a Medieval City makes a very intelligent decision. I saw a copy of Life in a Medieval City in my local library and took it as a sign. I had meant to pick up another one of their books but never quite got around to it until now. I have previously read their book Cathedral, Forge, and Waterwheel which was about medieval technology and quite enjoyed that - the scholarship is a little dated in places but it’s a good overview of the subject. Frances and Joseph Gies produced some of the most popular medieval history of the mid-20th century, and reading it now I can see why. You don’t come across popular history quite like this very often. 6/30/2023 0 Comments A kiss before dying charactersNor does he foresee how inexorably he will be enmeshed in the consequences of his own extreme deed. The government had been treating the first wave of Therians as a side effect of the war, one that would eventually die out. When it was clear the “problem” wasn’t going to go away, the US government tried to regain control of the masses, creating the Therian database and quickly passing new laws that would force all surviving Therians to register and get marked, supposedly for their own safety and that of their fellow Human citizens. Rumors ran rampant about governments trying to clean up their mess. Others died of cancer or infections due to weakened immune systems, while others vanished. Their Human bodies were unprepared for the shift. When the first infected Humans began changing in the late seventies, some didn’t survive. A dormant mutation within the virus was activated by the vaccine, resulting in the altering of human DNA, and giving birth to a new species: Therians. The vaccine known as Eppione.8 used strains from animals found to be immune to the virus, but one year after distribution, the course of human history was forever changed. Although no country would take credit for releasing the virus, the world’s top scientists came together to create a cure. DURING THE Vietnam War, the use of lethal biological warfare led to the spread of the Melanoe virus, infecting millions worldwide and causing the deaths of hundreds of thousands. |
